If you opened your car insurance renewal notice recently and felt your stomach drop, you're not alone. Las Vegas drivers are seeing some of the steepest rate increases in the country right now. The average full-coverage premium in Nevada hit

          $335 per month

           in 2026: that's over $4,000 a year and roughly

          60% higher

than the national average of $208 per month.

          Nevada insurers raised rates by

          6.42% this year

, following a brutal 13.65% increase in 2025. For most families, that's an extra $300 to $500 annually just to keep the same coverage they had before.

So what's going on? And more importantly, what can you actually do about it?

Why Las Vegas Rates Are Skyrocketing

The price hikes aren't random. Several factors unique to Las Vegas and Nevada are driving costs up across the board.

          1. We Have Way Too Many Crashes

          Clark County alone reports over

          20,000 crashes annually

. That's not a typo. Between the constant stream of tourists unfamiliar with our roads, 24-hour traffic patterns on the Strip, and aggressive driving during rush hour on the I-15, accidents are a daily reality here.

More crashes mean more claims. More claims mean insurers pay out more money. And when insurers pay out more, they pass those costs directly to you through higher premiums.

          2. Your Car Is Now a Rolling Computer

Modern vehicles are packed with sensors, cameras, and advanced safety technology. A fender bender that would have cost $1,500 to fix ten years ago now runs $3,000 or more because of calibration requirements for collision avoidance systems and lane-departure sensors.

          Repair costs have jumped

          20–30% in recent years

thanks to these technological advances. Even a small rear-end collision can require recalibrating multiple systems, and those specialty repairs aren't cheap.

          3. Medical Costs Keep Rising

Nevada is an at-fault state, which means insurers pay for medical expenses when their policyholders cause accidents. With medical inflation outpacing general inflation, the cost of treating injuries from car accidents has surged. Insurers are adjusting premiums to reflect these higher payout amounts.

          4. Too Many Uninsured Drivers

          Here's a frustrating reality: approximately

          11.1% of Nevada drivers

are uninsured. That's more than 1 in 10 cars on the road. When an uninsured driver causes an accident, insured drivers end up covering the costs through their own uninsured motorist coverage: and through higher premiums across the board.

          5. Population Growth and Traffic Congestion

Las Vegas continues to grow rapidly. More residents mean more cars, more congestion, and statistically, more accidents. The infrastructure hasn't kept pace with the population boom, which creates bottlenecks and increases collision frequency.

5 Proven Ways to Lower Your Rates in 2026

Rate increases are frustrating, but you're not powerless. Here are five strategies that actually work to bring your premium down.

          1. Shop Around: Seriously

This is the single most effective way to save money. Insurance rates vary

          significantly

between carriers, even for identical coverage. One company might quote you $400 per month while another offers the same protection for $320.

Why? Different insurers weigh risk factors differently. Some prioritize credit scores heavily, while others focus more on driving history. Some offer better rates for certain professions or age groups.

          Action step:

Get quotes from at least three different insurers. If you haven't shopped your rate in over two years, you're likely overpaying. An independent agent can compare multiple carriers for you in a single conversation, saving you hours of phone calls and online forms.

          2. Ask About Every Available Discount

Most drivers miss out on discounts simply because they don't ask. Common discounts include:

           Multi-policy discount:

Bundle your auto and home insurance (can save 15–25%)

           Safe driver discount:

No accidents or tickets in the past 3–5 years

           Low mileage discount:

Drive under 10,000 miles per year

           Defensive driving course:

            Complete an approved course

           Paid-in-full discount:

Pay your annual premium upfront instead of monthly

           Paperless/automatic payment discount:

Set up auto-pay and electronic documents

           Good student discount:

For young drivers maintaining a B average or higher

           Military or professional affiliation:

Many insurers offer discounts for veterans, teachers, nurses, and other professions

          Action step:

Call your current insurer and ask them to review every discount you might qualify for. Then compare that discounted rate with quotes from other carriers.

          3. Raise Your Deductible Strategically

Your deductible is what you pay out-of-pocket before insurance kicks in after a claim. Most people carry a $500 or $1,000 deductible. Increasing it to $2,000 can lower your premium by 15–30%, depending on your insurer.

          The math:

If raising your deductible from $500 to $1,000 saves you $300 per year, you'll break even after roughly 20 months if you have to file a claim. If you're a safe driver who rarely files claims, this strategy puts money back in your pocket.

          Important consideration:

Only raise your deductible to an amount you can comfortably afford to pay if you need to file a claim. Having a $2,000 deductible doesn't help if you can't cover it after an accident.

          4. Clean Up Your Credit and Driving Record

In Nevada, insurers use your credit-based insurance score to help determine your rate. If your credit has improved in the past few years, notify your insurer: you may qualify for a better rate.

Similarly, if it's been three years since your last ticket or accident, those incidents may no longer be affecting your rate. Some insurers automatically adjust for this, but others require you to request a review.

          Action step:

Check your driving record through the Nevada DMV. If there are errors, get them corrected. Then contact your insurer to ensure they're using your current, clean record for rating purposes.

          5. Lock In Your Rate Before the Next Increase

Nevada has experienced back-to-back years of significant rate increases. Industry analysts expect this trend to continue into 2027, though at a potentially slower pace.

Many insurers allow you to lock in your current rate by paying for six months or a full year upfront. If rates increase again mid-year, you're protected until your policy renews.

          Action step:

Ask your agent whether your insurer offers rate protection or extended policy terms that shield you from mid-term increases.

Why Working with an Independent Agent Makes a Difference

Here's something most people don't realize:

not all insurance agents are created equal.

Captive agents work for a single insurance company. They can only sell you that one company's policies. If their company isn't competitive for your situation, you're out of luck.

          Independent agents like

When rates increase, we proactively reach out to review your policy and search for savings. You get the expertise of a professional advocate without the limitation of being stuck with a single carrier.

Car insurance rates aren't going to magically drop on their own. The factors driving increases: accident rates, repair costs, uninsured drivers: aren't disappearing anytime soon.

But you can take control of what you pay. Start by getting a competitive quote. See where you stand compared to current market rates. Then implement the savings strategies that make sense for your situation.

Nevada made significant changes to its business insurance laws in 2025, and Las Vegas business owners need to understand how these updates affect their coverage requirements and costs. Whether you're running a small restaurant on the Strip or managing a construction company in Henderson, these changes could impact your bottom line.

Let's break down the seven most important updates you need to know about.

          1. Workers' Compensation Payroll Cap Eliminated

          The biggest change:

Senate Bill 317 removed the $36,000 annual wage cap for workers compensation insurance nevada premium calculations.

Previously, if you had an employee earning $50,000 per year, your workers comp premiums only factored in the first $36,000. Now, the full $50,000 counts toward your premium calculation.

What this means for your business:

Higher-paid employees will increase your workers comp costs

Companies with executive salaries or skilled trades workers will see the biggest impact

Nevada's competitive market should keep increases moderate

          Example:

A Las Vegas tech company with five developers earning $80,000 each will now pay premiums based on $400,000 in payroll instead of $180,000 under the old system.

The good news? Nevada's workers comp market remains highly competitive, so shop around if your rates jump significantly.

          2. New Health Insurance Claims Processing Deadlines

Assembly Bill 52 established strict new requirements for health insurance claims processing, effective January 1, 2026.

          Key changes:

Faster payment deadlines for electronic claims

Different standards for paper versus digital submissions

New penalties for insurers who don't comply

Impact on las vegas business insurance:

If you provide health coverage for employees, expect your insurance carrier to process claims more efficiently. This should reduce administrative headaches and improve employee satisfaction with their benefits.

          3. Flex-Rated Filing Program Launches

Assembly Bill 376 requires Nevada's Insurance Commissioner to create a new "Program of Flex-Rated Filing" starting January 1, 2026.

          What it means:

Insurance companies get more flexibility in setting rates

Could lead to more competitive pricing for some businesses

Rates might adjust more frequently based on market conditions

For small business insurance las vegas owners, this could mean more personalized pricing based on your specific risk profile rather than broad industry categories.

          4. Expanded Casualty Insurance Definition

Assembly Bill 512 broadened Nevada's definition of casualty insurance, effective October 1, 2025.

          The change:

The state now recognizes additional types of coverage under casualty insurance, potentially affecting how certain policies are regulated and priced.

          For your business:

This mainly impacts how insurance companies structure and sell certain liability policies. You might see new coverage options or different pricing structures for liability insurance nevada policies.

          5. Medicare Supplemental Policy Access Expanded

Senate Bill 292 allows people under 65 to purchase Medicare supplemental policies in certain situations.

          Business relevance:

While this doesn't directly impact most commercial policies, it affects how you might structure health benefits for employees with disabilities or specific health conditions. This expanded access could provide more options for comprehensive employee health coverage.

Assembly Bill 206 proposes allowing "eroding limits" liability insurance policies again.

Current status:

           Still pending, but worth watching.

          What eroding limits means:

Traditional liability insurance maintains your coverage limit even after paying claims. With eroding limits, each claim payment reduces your remaining coverage for the policy period.

          Example:

You have $1 million in liability coverage. Under eroding limits, if you have a $300,000 claim, you'd only have $700,000 left for the rest of the policy period.

          Business impact:

If this passes, these policies might offer lower premiums but provide less protection. Nevada banned them in 2023, so this would reverse that decision.

          7. Updated Essential Coverage Requirements

Nevada reinforced its basic business insurance requirements with clearer guidelines for 2025.

          Every Nevada business must have:

General liability insurance (mandatory for all businesses)

Workers' compensation (if you have employees)

Additional requirements based on business size:

Health insurance for full-time employees (larger companies)

Retirement plans (businesses with 6+ employees)

          Las Vegas-specific considerations:

Tourism, hospitality, and service businesses face additional liability exposures that standard policies might not fully cover. Consider umbrella policies or industry-specific coverage.

          Commercial Auto Insurance Changes

While not a specific law change, nevada commercial auto insurance requirements have been emphasized more strongly in 2025. Las Vegas businesses using vehicles for deliveries, client visits, or transportation need adequate commercial auto coverage.

          Key reminder:

Personal auto policies don't cover business use. If employees drive for work purposes, you need commercial coverage or face significant liability gaps.

            - Verify all business vehicle use is properly covered.

           Evaluate health insurance offerings

            - The new claims processing requirements might improve your employees' experience with benefits.

          Before January 2026:

Monitor the flex-rated filing program implementation

These changes reflect Nevada's effort to balance consumer protection with market competitiveness. For Las Vegas businesses, the key is staying informed and proactive about your coverage needs.

          Red flags to watch for:

Non-admitted carriers offering significantly cheaper rates (they lack Nevada Division of Insurance oversight and consumer protections)

Policies that seem too good to be true following these law changes

Gaps in coverage during the transition period

          Best practices:

Work with licensed Nevada insurance professionals who understand local requirements

Review policies annually, especially with these recent changes

Document all business activities to ensure proper coverage classification

Keep detailed records of employee roles and vehicle usage

The nevada small business insurance market remains competitive, but these law changes mean you can't set-and-forget your coverage. Regular reviews ensure you're compliant and adequately protected.

Las Vegas businesses operate in a unique environment with tourism, entertainment, and service industry exposures that other Nevada cities might not face. These 2025 law changes add another layer of complexity, but they also create opportunities for better-tailored coverage.

Stay proactive about understanding how these changes affect your specific business. The investment in proper coverage always costs less than the alternative of being underinsured when you need protection most.

When most people think about insurance, they imagine a monthly bill—or worse, something they “have to have.” But the truth is,

insurance is one of the most important financial tools every household uses

, even if they don’t realize it.
Whether you rent an apartment, own a home, drive a car, run a small business, or care for your family’s health,

insurance affects your household income, financial stability, and peace of mind

           more than almost anything else.
Let’s break it down in plain language.

 Insurance = Income Protection

Imagine losing your income tomorrow because of a car accident, illness, or property damage. Could your household still pay rent, buy groceries, or keep the lights on?
Here’s where insurance plays a vital role:

Health insurance

helps cover hospital bills and doctor visits, so medical debt doesn’t wipe out your savings.

           Auto insurance

protects you from paying thousands out-of-pocket after an accident.

           Life insurance

ensures your loved ones aren’t left in financial hardship if something happens to you.

           Disability or critical illness coverage

can replace lost income when you’re unable to work.

Think of insurance as a safety net that protects your paycheck and future goals.

 Insurance Helps Manage Household Budgets
Many families live paycheck to paycheck—and one unexpected event (like a surgery, flood, or lawsuit) could cause serious financial damage. Insurance helps you

turn unpredictable risks into manageable monthly expenses

           .
For example:

A $40/month renter’s policy can cover $20,000 worth of belongings after a fire.

A $25/month term life policy could provide your family with $250,000 in protection.

          ✅ It’s all about

          transferring risk

, so you don’t have to shoulder the full financial burden yourself.

The Hidden Cost of NOT Having Insurance It might be tempting to skip insurance to save money—but that choice can cost you a lot more in the long run.

Here’s what can happen without proper coverage:

An emergency room visit could cost $3,000–$10,000 without health insurance.

A car accident could leave you paying for vehicle repairs, legal fees, and medical bills out of pocket.

A house fire or burglary could force you to start over without help replacing your losses.

In every case, not having insurance drains your

, causes stress, and derails your financial goals.

Insurance Is an Investment in Peace of Mind Insurance isn't just about money—it’s about mental and emotional security too.
When you know you’re covered:

           You sleep better at night.

You focus more on your job and family.

You worry less about the "what ifs."

          It’s not just a financial decision—it’s a lifestyle decision.

‍♀️ How to Make Insurance Work for You Here’s what smart consumers do:

           Review coverage yearly

Handling our many household chores is all about convenience. For many decades, the incredible washer and dryer power duo has made it possible for us to enjoy easy access to clean, ready-to-wear wardrobes. However, these appliances have a dark side that can result in serious loss, particularly dryers.

The United States Fire Administration (USFA), a federal agency that collects and shares data on fire-related losses, reminds us that dryers, while extremely handy, can also be dangerous. In a recent agency report, fires caused by clothes dryers result in losses of $35 million per year, nationwide. Let's repeat that - $35 million in dryer-related losses each and every year.

According to the report, such losses occur more frequently in cooler weather, occurs mostly in residences and, for a bit of good news, most fires are limited to the dryer itself. However, such fires can and do easily spread to other parts of an apartment or home.

More than a third of dryer fire losses are created by insufficient dryer maintenance and improper use. Therefore, dryers, as a source of loss, are quite controllable by homeowners. Here are some suggestions to help minimize dryer fires:

Properly and regularly clean out lint traps - that should include vacuuming out the area housing the lint trap too

Avoid putting items in a dryer which are more prone to igniting such as items containing foam (lined drapes, athletic shoes, bathroom rugs)

Remove lint that accumulates underneath and in areas outside of the dryer which are also sources of fire

Regularly clean out dryer vents. A thorough job is necessary to keep vents free of accumulated lint and, even more serious, bird or rodent nests

Do not overload dryers since fires are more likely due to restricted air flow and higher heat build-up

Make sure the dryer vent pipe is properly installed and is free of kinks (again, to avoid air flow restriction and heat build-up

Consider using a dryer that has a moisture sensor which can end dryer cycles with less of a heat build-up that is permitted by dryers that use thermostats

          COULD HAVE BEEN COVERED!?

That is correct. Most self employed people and even some small business owners do not carry Workers Comp on themselves.

There are designed insurance plans that will cover you on and off the job — 24-hours a day, if you are not required by law to have Workers Compensation coverage.

          2. ARE YOU WRITING IT OFF?

Independent contractors (1099's), home based business owners, professionals and other self employed people generally are not taking advantages of the tax laws available to them.

Many people who are paying 100% of their own costs are eligible to deduct their monthly insurance payments. Just that alone can reduce your net out-of-pocket costs of a proper plan by as much as 40%. Ask your accounting professional if you are eligible and/or check out the IRS website for more information.

          3. INTERNAL LIMITS

All true insurance plans use some form of internal controls to determine how much they will pay out for a particular procedure or service. There are two basic methods.

          -Scheduled Benefits

Many plans, some of which are specifically marketed to self employed and independent people, have a clear schedule of what they will pay per doctor office visit, hospital stay, or even limits on what they will pay for testing per 24-hr. period. This structure is usually associated with "Indemnity Plans". If you are presented with one of these plans, be sure to see the schedule of benefits, in writing. It is important that you understand these type of limits up front because once you reach them the company will not pay anything over that amount.

          -Usual and Customary

"Usual and Customary" refers to the rate of pay out for a doctor office visit, procedure or hospital stay that is based on what the majority of physicians and facilities charge for that particular service in that particular geographical or comparable area. "Usual and Customary" charges represent the highest level of coverage on most major medical plans.

4.YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO SHOP!

If you are reading this you, are probably shopping for a health plan. Every day people shop, for everything from groceries to a new home. During the shopping process, generally, the value, price, personal needs and general marketplace gets evaluated by the buyer. With this in mind, it is very disconcerting that most people never ask what a test, procedure or even doctor visit will cost. In this ever-changing health insurance market, it will become increasingly important for these questions to be asked of our medical professionals. Asking price will help you get the most out of your plan and reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.

          5. NETWORKS AND DISCOUNTS

Almost all insurance plans and benefit programs work with medical networks to access discounted rates. In broad strokes, networks consist of medical professionals and facilities who agree, by contract, to charge discounted rates for services rendered. In many cases the network is one of the defining attributes of your program. Discounts can vary from 10% to 60% or more. Medical network discounts vary, but to ensure you minimize your out-of-pocket expenses, it is imperative that you preview the network's list of physicians and facilities before committing. This is not only to ensure that your local doctors and hospitals are in the network, but also to see what your options would be if you were to need a specialist.

Ask your agent what network you are in, ask if it is local or national and then determine if it meets your own individual needs.

This was an appeal by insureds from a grant of summary judgment against them on their lawsuit against an insurer for breach of contract and wrongful termination of insurance, and for negligent representation on the part of the insurer's agent. There was no insurance in force when their drapery business was damaged by fire.

The insurer issued a business package policy, and later conducted a survey because underwriting practice prescribed it when property insurance was in excess of a specified amount. The insurer canceled the policy more than sixty days after it was effective upon the inspector's recommendation. He found that, while the insureds did sell draperies, they were in the business of manufacturing them to a much greater extent. The insurance company did not insure manufacturers. The insurer's agent then referred the clients to another insurance office for replacement coverage, which was arranged. That insurer canceled its policy, apparently for nonpayment of premium. (Its action was not contested.) The fire occurred thereafter.

The evidence made clear that the first insurer's agent had filled in the insurance application, indicating the type of business as "drapery sales," as he was told by a representative of the insureds. A co-owner of the firm signed the application, certifying that she had read it and that the statements were correct.

The New Mexico Supreme Court found that the agent "satisfied his legal duty" when he procured another underwriter for the insureds. It found that the pertinent statute provided for cancellation within sixty days without cause and, thereafter, for reasonable cause and giving notice of cancellation. The insureds did not dispute their receiving cancellation notice. They said they were misled in not being informed of the reason for it.

The court concluded that the insurer had complied with the statute, noting that an insurer was not required to inform insureds of the specific cause when giving notice of cancellation. It also found it difficult to understand how "experienced business people" could believe a policy was in force after they had received notice of its cancellation and they had then arranged replacement coverage in another company.

The summary judgment of the trial court was affirmed in favor of the insurance company and its agent and against the insureds.

Many drivers think that other classes of drivers should have their driving skills regularly tested

The majority of drivers think that their driving habits are fine…everyone else is the problem

It is useless for individual drivers to look any further for solutions than themselves. The only thing that is under a driver's control is his or her own driving behavior. While you can't predict what another driver is going to do, you can make a stronger effort to make the roads and streets safer.

Obey traffic lights, signs and road markings. All of these are important methods to control traffic and minimize accidents. Just try to figure out how much time you "save" by tailgating, lane changing and running traffic lights. If you save anything, it's seconds, not minutes. Also, if you are involved in an accident, you've just lost any time ever gained by risky driving. Insurance paperwork and accident reports can claim hours and days of your life. If time is important to you, then take the time to pay attention to the rules of the road.

You will also find it healthier and safer to avoid paranoia. The other drivers in the other cars and trucks are not out to get you. Don't take things personally since the silly things that happen in cars are usually mistaken or mindless, not malicious. Just relax and concentrate on your own driving. Yield right of way to others, stop for school buses, and watch for pedestrians and bicyclists. The more patient, respectful, and attentive drivers there are on the road, the better it will be…for all of us (and our insurance rates).

In part one of "Become a Better Driver," our advice was that the roads will be safer for all when, as individuals, we reject distractions and become more attentive while operating vehicles. That advice is quite solid. However, driving trends still show that, in recent years, accidents have been increasing, so many people are, literally, not paying attention.

A major reason for our growing vehicle safety problems are the growth of distractions, primarily those caused by smart phone use. Driving Safety and authorities continue to warn us, but our use of smart phones has become so popular that they are routinely causing dangerous behavior by both drivers and pedestrians.

In such times, it makes sense to take greater steps to keep yourself safe on our roadways. Building on the base behaviors that make you a safer driver, you must consider the strategy, embracing defensive driving. The chief element of defensive driving is to assume that outside forces are actively working to endanger you, therefore you have to shift your driving behavior us a notch from attentive to vigilant.

A method for defensive vehicle operation comes from a paper titled SPIDER: A Framework for Understanding Driver Distraction. It was written by David Strayer, D. and Fisher, D. and appeared in University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Human Factors, Vol. 58, No. 1, February 2016.

This can be an effective approach that recognizes and mitigates the driving danger that others create by their distracted behavior. Actively assuming that others may be distracted allows you to take extra precautions when approaching intersections or when dealing with pedestrians.

Example: A kitchen fire occurs from an unfortunate mishap and completely destroys the apartment. The owner or landlord requires payment to rebuild the apartment. Who should pay for for damages? The mishap occurred by the tenant, in this case the tenant may be found labile for damages. The average cost to replace and rebuild an apartment can cost as much as $500,000.

Either way a negative health problem is bound to happen. One Las Vegas family didn't realize they would ever need a surgery. Guess what it happen, and the cost was over $18,000.

Another family experienced another medical condition that resulted in a week long stay in the hospital. The medical bills totaled over $50,000. The hospital was generous, but not to generous the discount reduced the bill to a whopping $30,000.

Did you know that most families in Nevada earn an average household annual income between $50,000 to $60,000. If one medical episode occurred a family with no medical insurance coverage would be wiped out, financially. At this point many would realize that bankruptcy is there only option. Bankruptcy's has negative effects on a person's credit. To start a bankruptcy can remain on your credit for up to 10 years and some debts may not be discharge able in the bankruptcy.

Making the step to sign up for health insurance for your family can cost as little as $0 per month. The health insurance annual open enrollment occurs once per year unless you qualify for a life changing event.

Two years after the completion of a new high school, it was determined that the window system used during construction was allowing water to infiltrate the building. Mold was discovered. Faulty installation was part of the issue. The cost to remediate the problem was shared by the general contractor and the manufacturer of the windows. The sub-contractor who installed the windows was no longer in business. The general contractor did not have pollution coverage for mold and paid over $900,000.

You can take control of your next trip, whether it’s across the state or across town, by following these simple rules:

           Pay attention

. Do you know how many drivers around the country are using cell phones or other electronic devices right now? If it’s daytime, the answer is approximately 660,000, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says. Anything that takes your eyes off the road or distracts you increases your risk of a crash. Here’s another reason to avoid distractions: If you’re completely alert, you have a better chance of steering clear of that guy who is shaving on his way to work.

           Stay sober.

One bad decision can change lives forever, and driving under the influence is an extraordinarily bad decision. Nearly 15,000 died in 2012 in crashes involving impaired drivers, according to the National Safety Council (NSC). So get a designated driver — or better yet, be a designated driver. Best of all, have the party at your house and let everyone sleep over.

They say “speed kills,” and, as depressing as it sounds, it’s true. Crashes caused by excessive speed cause more than 10,000 deaths a year on average, the NSC says. Surprisingly, you are most at risk on roads where the speed limit is 55 mph or below. Remember, the posted speed limit isn’t always the best speed to travel. Depending on conditions, going slower might be the safest option.

Improving safety on the roads isn’t rocket science. Just a little common sense can make a big difference for you, your passengers and your fellow drivers. So be alert and be safe out there on the roads in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In one case a company was able to claim a lost check, the amount was not substantial it's still money that is yours. Keeping your money in the unclaimed property fund does nothing for your financial goals. Another case was a person who found out he was owed over $500 dollars.

Nevada - How much home insurance is right for you?

Based in Las Vegas, Nevada Insurance Group of Nevada understands the home insurance needs of our customers. We’ll work with you to estimate the replacement cost for your home and to adjust your policy limits from time to time as needed.

It is critical that you provide us with accurate, updated information about your home and contents. If your dwelling limit accurately reflects your home’s true replacement cost, some companies will pay more than the limit if a covered loss is greater than the limit on your policy.

Once a review of your home and possessions indicates you are properly insured, it’s a good idea to reexamine your coverages and limits from time to time, especially whenever you make additions or improvements. Insurance Group of Nevada can help you re-evaluate your insurance needs, just give us a call at (702) 996-6434 to speak with one of our agents.

Here are some steps you can take to reduce the danger of being seriously underinsured:

Call Insurance Group of Nevada If you have questions or concerns about the limits in your policy, ask us to show you how those amounts were calculated. This will also give you an opportunity to make us aware of any overlooked information.

Read your policy. Certain property, such as jewelry, and certain perils, such as earthquake or flood, is better insured separately. Knowing what is covered and for how much will help you insure properly. If there is anything in your policy you don’t understand, contact Insurance Group of Nevada at (702) 996-6434 and ask for an explanation.

Consider carefully whether your policy provides all the protection you need. Does it provide coverage for extra costs resulting from building code changes? Does it automatically increase coverage limits annually to keep pace with inflation? Does it provide additional funds if the cost of rebuilding your home exceeds the policy limits?

          Make sure you know:

Will your insurance company stand behind agreed upon repairs after a claim? Some companies are willing to put this guarantee in writing.

           Does your policy includ

e replacement cost coverage for contents (clothing, furniture, appliances, and other personal property inside your home)? If not, you can add it by endorsement. The cost is small, the protection valuable. Replacement Cost Coverage pays for losses to your possessions at the cost of brand new items. Without this option, a covered loss to your personal possessions would be depreciated by their age and condition, reducing the size of your claim settlement.

If you have an art collection, antique furniture, jewelry, or other valuable possessions, talk to your agent about supplemental coverages, such as fine arts or scheduled property endorsements, to adequately protect your investment in these items. The cost is modest for the extra protection, and often the deductible is waived.

Consider whether you should have more coverage for personal property (contents) than your policy provides. Personal property coverage is usually 70% of the coverage limit for the structure. Your limit may be lower than 70%. Supplemental protection is available for a small additional premium.

Inventory your home. Prepare an inventory of personal property items, update it periodically, and keep it in a safe place outside your home, such as a safe deposit box at your bank. It will save you hours of time trying to list everything damaged or destroyed if you need to make a claim. It will also help ensure you don’t forget some items. (702) 996-6434 can advise you on ways to simplify the job of preparing a personal property inventory such as videotaping each room with descriptive information on the sound track.

          Personal Liability

Besides making sure you have enough protection to cover possible damage to your own home and contents, you should also evaluate your exposure to liability risks. These result from damage to the property of another, or injury to a person, not a member of your household, for which you can be responsible.

In recent years it’s become common for homeowners to be sued for injuries or damages to others, even when there is no evidence of negligence by the homeowner. The reality today is if you have any appreciable assets, you are exposed to the risk of being sued. Even if you ultimately prevail in court, your legal fees and the months or years of worry and uncertainty can be a terrible burden on you and your family.

The Personal Liability coverage provided by your Homeowners Policy usually provides a limit of $100,000 or $300,000. We recommend increasing this protection with a personal umbrella policy. Not only will it increase your personal liability, but also your auto liability. Limits are available from $1 million to $10 million and beyond. The cost of this coverage is usually very reasonable.

Today, things have changed quite a bit, and the playing field has been leveled. Advanced tools and security systems are more accessible and affordable than ever. (And installing them might get you a discount on your homeowners insurance, too.)

Full-service systems are still a popular option with many people. Companies offer central monitoring, video surveillance, smoke/carbon monoxide detection and more. Some even include home automation tools so you can control appliances from anywhere, and many will send text-message alerts in response to specific occurrences, such as when the kids enter the house after school.

Do-it-yourselfers who don’t want an all-in-one system have many choices as well. Here are three of the newest and most popular security tools:

          1. Smart (and small) cameras

Cameras today can be tucked anywhere and don’t require wires. With a good battery and wi-fi connection, you can see what’s happening outside — or inside — with a glance at your phone or computer.

          2. Key-free doors

Say you have a friend stopping by to check on your dog while you’re gone for the day. You don’t have to risk leaving a key outside. With a code-based entry system, you can simply provide your friend with temporary access that turns on and off when you want.

          3. Home automation products

It’s easier than you think to give yourself remote access to the lights and appliances in your home. At least one available product can be used with your existing power outlets; simply plug it in and control the power to that outlet from an app on your smartphone. Don’t ever worry about forgetting to leave a light on again.

Of course, even “old-school” tools, such as motion-activated outdoor lights, can still have a big impact on security. So whether you choose high-tech tools or stick to the basics, you’ll be making your home here in Las Vegas a less attractive target for burglars.

There is a some things you need to consider before diving into the insurance carrier rate filings. First, know what territory you reside in. One of the many characteristics to insurance rates is where someone lives. This is also known as the base rate. Insurance companies with lower base rates then its competitors may provide you with more savings. Second thing to consider is the amount of discounts that are filed with each insurance carrier. Lastly you would need to determine the class factor. The class factor is how different vehicles are rated.

The rising costs of lawsuits and judgments are important for today's business owner to consider.
